We believe that passing on our faith to the next generation is the most important task of our Church. Each year, our youth go on a one-week mission trip where we work with the poorest of the poor. Our congregation supports our youth by participating in the fund-raising activities. Our young people have gone to Vermont, Colorado, New York, and Boston. Handing on the message of Jesus Christ to the next generation is an imperative. Because most of our young people have limited resources, we required our youth to do 70 hours of volunteer service at church to subsidize the trip. Their volunteer work included grass cutting, painting, cleaning, setting up for the Easter brunch, and participating in fundraisers. The fund-raising events build cohesiveness between the youth and the rest of the congregation. We have had bake sales, sponsored ballroom dance classes, held raffles, washed cars for members during the Sunday Service, had tailgate parties, made and sold candy, and organized a book sale. Each year, we have raised almost $8000 for the mission trips. These mission trip opportunities forever change the lives of the participants.
We offer Sunday School classes for ages 3 through 6th grade. Our classes meet for 30 minutes before the Sunday Services. Gentle and nurturing leaders teach them. The classes are Bible-based. We have confirmation classes for our 7th and 8th graders, as well as an active youth group that meets regularly throughout the school year.
Pastor Lorrie teaches two Bible studies weekly. One meets 15 minutes after the Sunday church service and the other one meets on Wednesday nights at 6:00 PM. In addition to becoming more familiar with the Bible, the warm, friendly, small group setting allows members to develop a meaningful rapport with their brothers and sisters in the Lord. The classes consist of two eight-week segments, one in the fall and one in the spring. The classes frequently mimic the classes Pastor Lorrie taught on the university level. At Cardinal Stritch University, she taught classes on the Gospel of Matthew, the Gospel of John, Revelation, Women in Scripture, the Prophets, the Letters of Paul, Genesis, Exodus, and survey classes on both the Old and the New Testament.
There are plenty of opportunities to be involved at Calvary Church. We have an active volunteer team whereby we help support local missions. We serve supper at St. Ben’s monthly. We have a dart ball team, a friendship club, a quilters group, a knitting circle, and a CLAS group.
