Dear Calvary Memorial,

TODAY MATTERS!

How does one person make a difference?
Richard Dugdale asked himself that question in 1874.
He was a member of the executive committee of the Prison System in New York and he was chosen to inspect thirty county jails.  When he got to one county, he was surprised by how many people in jail were related by blood.  He discovered that this family was notorious for their criminal behavior.  He researched the family and discovered that their family tree could be traced back to a man called Max, who was born about 1720.  He had six daughters and two sons.  He was a heavy drinker and wasn’t fond of work or marriage.  Of his 709 descendants, 180 were living in poverty, 140 were criminals, 60 were habitual thieves and 50 were common prostitutes.
Another kind of family.
Jonathan Edwards, the theologian, pastor and president of Princeton was born in 1703 and he and his wife Sarah, had eleven children.  Of his 1400 descendants, 13 were college presidents, 65 were professors, 100 were lawyers, including a law school dean, 30 were judges, 66 were physicians, 80 were holders of public office, including 3 U.S. senators, 3 majors of large cities, 3 governors, a controller of the U.S. Treasury and a U. S. vice president.

  • Starbucks was out of pumpkin spice so I had to get another gingerbread latte this morning instead
  • My iPhone always tilts the wrong way when I use it while I’m lying in bed.
  • I really have to use the bathroom but my roommate is taking a shower
  • Downtown fireworks upset my dog and she puked on the rug
  • I can’t run the half marathon I paid $60 for because my knee sucks, & now I don’t know to do with the tee-shirt.
  • The NCAA is allowing Auburn to get away with the pay-for-play shenanigans without punishment.
  • …And church ran late, so we missed the first race
  • My dad is forcing me to go to the track and eat free food and drink free bourbon for the third day in a row.
  • I think I ate enough food today to feed an entire third world country.
  • Just had a creepy old man talk to me at the gym. Turns out he works with me, too. Great.
  • My car is out of windshield cleaner!!!
  • Forgot to set my fantasy football line up before Thursday night’s game.
  • FOX NFL Sunday decided against showing the Packers-Vikings game so I had to follow it on my laptop instead.
  • My roommate is making too much noise while unloading the dishwasher, and now I can’t take my midday nap.
  • The space heater in my office is working too well, and now it’s hot in here.
  • Ran out of coffee so I had to combine two different types
  • My grad program wants to hire an under-qualified professional to fill a tenure track research position.
  • I have to rush home and cook dinner for my family even though I’m still stuffed from my three-course lunch
  • My dog didn’t poop on our evening walk so now I am going to have to walk her around the block later tonight

JESUS HEALS!

Teaching and Healing was our Bible story this week from the Gospel of Mark. We read about Jesus’ miraculous healing of a man with evil spirits and his amazing teachings. When the sick man needed help the crowd didn’t care about him, but Jesus cared and he cares about us, too. When we need help with something, we can pray to Jesus, and he’ll listen to us. Jesus always hears our prayers!

NEXT WEEK: No Sunday School on the 1st Sunday of the Month. Keep practicing Psalm 23. I’ll be available during coffee hour if you want to recite your verse to me.

MISSION

Our Food Pantry is thriving with the help of all of you who have been so faithfully bringing in food items to fill our cupboards. The overwhelming response to our vision of providing food assistance to our members has prompted us to look further into ways of growing our pantry.
Pastor Lorrie and some of our Mission Team members visited “Feeding America” this past week to learn more about how we can partner with them to make a real difference in the lives of our families.
Feeding America is a national hunger relief organization. Most of the food at Feeding America is donated by food manufacturers, wholesalers, brokers, retailers and growers. They offer charitable organizations an opportunity to fill their food pantries at no charge for the food, but a small shared maintenance fee to cover both transportation and storage expenses. Their warehouses are filled with all the items you would see in a typical grocery store and more….
Our Mission Team will be meeting during the next several weeks to discuss and evaluate the possibility of partnering with Feeding America to better serve our members.

PEOPLE ARE WATCHING YOU

Christian Disciples involves the two F’s:  Faithfulness and Fearlessness.  Jesus taught us that the world is soaked with the presence of God.  The world is full of holiness.  The world is full of the weight of God.  Jesus taught that forgiveness is better than carrying bitterness; compassion is better than indifference; pursuing peace is better than pursing violence and honesty is better than lying.

Discipleship: Colossians 3:17
“Whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it in the name of the Lord.”
The road is narrow to live selflessly.  The road is demanding and difficult when we are called to serve others.  To be engaged in the world in the name of Jesus Christ means that our hearts will be broken again and again.  As disciples we are called to carry the message of Jesus to the world.

CALVARY KIDZ

Jonah & the Whale
“God Asks Us to Obey”

Our lesson this week was Jonah & the Whale. We learned the importance of listening and obeying God. God asks us not only to obey Him but also our parents. We discussed how there are consequences when we disobey. Jonah’s consequence for disobeying was being swallowed by a whale and living in it’s belly for three days. The kids all preferred the consequences their parents give for disobeying!

CONFIRMATION

There are 14 stain glass windows in our church.  Each window represents a Christian theme or a Bible passage.  On Sunday, we studied each window and read the corresponding scripture passages.  During Lent the students will present information about each window.  Take time to look at each window before the students give their presentations.

ANNUAL MEETING

January 29, 2012

Calvary Memorial’s Annual Meeting will be held this Sunday, January 29th, following the 9:30am worship service.
All members are encouraged to attend this important meeting. Items of importance to the life of our church are discussed as well as elections to fill vacancies in our Church Council.

Dear Calvary Memorial,

Called to Live Differently!

Being a Christian should have an enormous impact on our daily life. Our lives should be marked with interactions that are full of compassion and grace. As followers of Jesus, WE are called to imitate his actions of reaching out to those people who need encouragement.

God baptized Jesus with love and Jesus baptized others with his love. During the sermon, I asked, “How do we baptize one another?” Do we baptize people with anger, with joy, with ridicule or with grace? Do we scandalize the church by creating drama or by turning people away from the church with gossip? Do we volunteer and offer our gifts and talents thereby baptizing the world with our talents?

We are called to be the light of Jesus Christ.

CALVARY KIDZ

In recognition of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday we talked this week about our birthdays and our DREAMS!  Our children have wonderful futures in store for them if they follow their dreams. We will have singers, pianists, veterinarians, police, and even a mermaid!

PSALM 23

During the next several months, the children will be learning a few verses a week of Psalm 23 and how we can call on it when our souls are in need of comfort and calm. God is our shepherd and we are his sheep and if we trust in him, surely goodness and mercy shall follow us all the days of our lives!

CONFIRMATION

We will have confirmation class every Sunday after Church until the students are confirmed in May.

The Church Season: The Church has several seasons and each season has a color.

Advent is blue (4 weeks before Christmas)

The altar of the church is wood because Protestants remember the last supper and the table of the last supper was wood.

The altar of the church faces the East because the sun rises in the east and Jesus is the Son of God and because Jerusalem is east.

The initials on the altar are Latin and they mean Jesus, the King of the Jews. These initials were inscribed over the cross of Jesus.

RESERVING ROOMS IN THE CHURCH

If you are interested in reserving a room at church (fellowship hall, meeting rooms, kitchen, etc.) please see George Cooper. This will help us to avoid having two events scheduled at the same time for the same place. Thanks you.

GIVING STATEMENTS & ENVELOPES


If you haven’t already picked up your 2011 Giving Statements and 2012 Offertory Envelopes, please do so as soon as possible. Please contact the office if you would like to make special arrangements to get you statement and envelopes.

Your 2012 Envelopes will be placed in your mailboxes this Sunday. Please see John Schroeder to pick up your 2011 Giving Statements.

ATTENDANCE REGISTRATION

Another way to go paperless! We would like to discontinue using the attendance registration forms you see in the little red book at the end of your pew. We will use up whatever registration forms we have left and then discontinue their use.  Our ushers count each week the number of people who attend our worship services and our “Welcome Table” volunteers are doing a great job greeting visitors and obtaining contact information for follow up.

MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORIES

We are working with Olan Mills to put the final touches on our new Member Pictorial Directory. In the meantime, since we have had so many new members since our last update, Member Directories are available in the fellowship hall for you to take home.
If you change any of your directory information in the future, please contact the church office. We will be adding an area to our weekly newsletter to update you on any member changes to keep your records current.

FRIENDSHIP CLUB

I’m sorry that I cancelled the breakfast as soon as I did. If the weathermen would have been right, I would not have wanted to put anyone in danger of driving on slippery roads.

“ENCOURAGE ONE ANOTHER”

Look at the Stars!!!

In order to understand the story of the wise men, we need to take out our lawn chairs and look at the stars.  The beauty of God’s work refreshes our soul.

CALVARY KIDZ

What an exciting time this is — the beginning of a new year! Some of us make New Year’s Resolutions promising to do things different in the new year. The new year gives us the chance to forget our past mistakes and look forward to doing better in the year ahead.
In our Bible lesson this week, we talked about another new beginning that’s better than the beginning of a new year — it’s the beginning of a new life in Jesus. We learned about how John the Baptist went all around Judea baptizing people who had repented and asked Jesus for forgiveness. They were baptized to show others that God had forgiven their sins and washed them clean for a  fresh start in life.
God’s forgiveness gives us a fresh start too — to begin this new year living our life in Christ!

We need to re-wax our floors in Fellowship Hall.  This means that the old wax needs to be taken off and new wax reapplied.  This has not been done in several years.  It will cost about $700.00 in supplies and the Council has approved that for the next two months, the monthly mission will support redoing the floor.
