The Messenger
God is still speaking…
August 30 – September 5, 2010

When we are having a dinner party and have a question about proper etiquette, most of us would probably consult a reference by Emily Post.  However, Sunday’s sermon gave us a list of Jesus’   “Divine Etiquette” for manners.  Not surprisingly, Jesus and Emily have quite different ideas of what’s important.  Listed below are Jesus’  “Top Ten Table Manners”.

  1. Pray
  2. Encourage others to seek out God’s dream for their life
  3. Learn to listen
  4. Help others discover their gifts
  5. Never criticize someone in front of someone else
  6. Talk about yourself only when you are asked
  7. Make a point of remembering people’s name, it is music to their ears
  8. Forgive each other
  9. Invite the lost, lonely, the least and the little ones
  10. Never pass up an opportunity to speak kind words of appreciation, there are 6 billion people on this planet and 5.9 billion go to bed every night starving for one honest word of love and encouragement *

Anyone following these rules of etiquette is sure to be a welcome guest at anyone’s home and a blessing in the lives of those around them.

* Some points were taken from “The Rhythm of Life” by Matthew Kelly

St. Ben’s Cooking

We will be cooking for St. Ben’s meal program each month on the Sunday before the second Monday of the month.  Our first day of cooking will be on September 12th following the Rally Day lunch.  Hilda Dombeck will be organizing the cooking teams for each month.  (About 4-5 people are needed to prepare the chili-mac that we take down to St. Ben’s for the meal).  If you are interested in being a part of this ministry, contact Hilda at hildadombeck@yahoo.com or call her at 262-781-0878.

A group of people also goes down to serve the meal on the second Monday of the month.  If you are able to help in this capacity, you can also let Hilda know.  The group meets at church at 4:15 PM and carpools down to St. Ben’s.  The meal is served from 5-6:30 and you can usually count on being back to church by 7:00 PM.

New Member Gathering

Last Sunday there was a wonderful gathering of people who were ready to join our church family, some who have just recently joined, and some who are in the process of looking for a church home.  After coffee fellowship everyone gathered in the sanctuary and Pastor Lorrie gave a brief explanation of the United Church of Christ as a denomination and of Calvary Memorial as an individual congregation. Several representatives of organizations in the church explained the opportunities for service and fellowship that are offered here.
Everyone then moved into Fellowship Hall to share lunch and conversation.  It was great to get together and learn more about each other.  Many of our new members have already become active in the church – singing with the praise team, helping with Vacation Bible School, going on the Youth Mission trip, and volunteering to help with our St Ben’s mission outreach.  We are certainly blessed to have such a wonderful group of adults and children join our church family.  The sound of children laughing and playing in the gym and so many people getting to know each other was certainly music to the ears.

Please welcome the following new members who joined officially last Sunday:

  • Bill and Ann Rudolph
  • Kirk, Julie, Aiden and Paige Puotinen
  • Jessie Mae, Trevion, Tatiyana, and Reese Hollimon
  • Christi Armstrong
  • Joseph, Jolliette, and Nissa Seide
  • Michael and Robin Wallingford

Some of these are already familiar faces around Calvary, but we were able to catch a few for pictures after the lunch.  Pictures of the rest will follow in the coming weeks.  We are truly blessed to have all of you join our church family.

We Are So Glad You’re Here!

Thank You

The Fahl family would like to extend our thanks to Pastor Lorrie, Council Members, and  the entire congregation for their overwhelming support to our family during this difficult time.  We have never felt so cared for!  It is a wonderful feeling to know that we have found a home at Calvary Memorial, but most of all we have found a family!

Friendship Club

September 8th, we will tour the “Lowell Damon House” on 76th Street at 11:00 AM.  We will have lunch at Mykonos on Capitol following the tour.  The sign up sheet is in Fellowship Hall.  All are welcome.

CROP Walk Coordinator Needed

We are looking for someone to be in charge of organizing a team of walkers to participate in the annual CROP Hunger Walk on October 10th at Milwaukee’s lakefront.  This walk brings together people from different faiths, cultures, and ages to raise awareness and funds for international relief and development as well as local hunger-fighting agencies.  Food donations are also collected for Hunger Task Force.  There is a 2 mile and a 5.5 mile route.  If this sounds like something you would like to be in charge of, contact Sandy Schroederus at s.schroederus@yahoo.com or call the church office at 414-461-7375.

Please keep in your prayers:
